2012-2013 Fall Leagues Get Going

After a successful 9 ball league this summer, I am dialed in to have an awesome fall season in my pool leagues. Our team has shifted this season since Chas started a new job on late shift and we picked up a relatively new league player. After playing the 1st place team in week one with a 1-5 start, we have managed to come around the last couple weeks to a record of 8-10.

VVS has changed things up a little bit this season with only 8 team in 4 divisions instead of the 11 teams we had last season in 3 different divisions.  I like this method since it will allow for a 23 week season with 2 position rounds and 3 chances at each team.  Previously, the 11 team required a couple bye weeks and only gave 2 matches for each of the other 10 teams.

I have started out pretty well with a 12-3 start on Wednesday leagues, I have messed up 3 EROs this season already...and I have none with one against me this past week. My Monday league is a part-time deal, but I have luckily started out 12-0 for the beginning of the season...it can only get worse! :)

Uneventful Position Round

After starting out the spring league 6-12, we have managed to finish very strong with 27-3 record the last 5 weeks. We have been stuck in 3rd the last 3 weeks as the top 3 teams have all shot well...only losing a couple rounds.

We are still 7 rounds behind 2nd, and 13 rounds ahead of 4th...so we will definitely get 3rd place in the league no matter what. Last season our 70% winning percentage was enough to take the league, this season the teams seem to be stacked a little better.

Probably gonna shoot some pool in the summer session...not sure though.

WW Gold Update

After ending up 3-3 the last two weeks, we were a little disappointed. Mainly because we were up 3-1 going into the last round both times, and managed to lose the last round bad enough to lose total as well. This week, we played the 3rd place Kingpins and started off with 10-1 ERO and 10-0 ERO in the first round. Another guy on our team broke dry in the 1st round and had an ERO against him 0-10.

We managed to sneak out the 1st round, and didn't really have a chance until the last round. I needed to win my last game to go 2-4, but didn't get it after messing up my runout twice and tying up a couple balls.

We have our bye next week, then I'll miss pool the next week as my wife and I will be going on a cruise.

WW Gold League Stats (Week 9)

As a team, we have finally turned things around a little bit on Wednesday night. Our team was 2 weeks away from being dead last in the position round week (forcing us to sit out that week) and in 11th place. We started off the league a respectful 11-13 after the first 4 weeks, then our team went 1-16 (1-5, 0-6, 1-5) the following 3 weeks to drop to last place. Last night, we managed to go 5-1 and give ourselves a little breathing room from the last spot.

I personally, played very poorly and was the only person to lose more than 2 games. I lost 3 games and shot a 34...there wasn't a single game where I had more than 2 innings at the table and my opponents were finishing me off when I made a mistake. I had an ERO in the 4th round as that was the only highlight of the evening for me.

I rearranged our team order, and Ryan (Mr. Anchor) was again last as he was in the our City Championship run. It came down to him 3 times (all 3 rounds that I lost in the 4th spot) and he won 2 of them. The video below, shows the result of Ryan's combo/safety that didn't quite work out. From my personal experience, it is very difficult to make the 8 ball when an AWESOME show was made on the ball before the 8 ball. Butch missed the 8 ball in the side and gave the game (and round) to Ryan.

Our team discussed not drinking until our 9:30 Cappy's Jagerbomb to get the team out of the cellar. Chas and I had glasses of pop and were ready to celebrate our 5-1 victory with 2 jagerbombs. Hopefully this is the turning point for our team and we will work our way back up to the middle of the pack. We are still more that a dozen games under 0.500 and will have our work ahead of us to recover from our 3 poor weeks of league.

Struggling In The Gold

I have been pretty quiet about our league so far this year, it started out okay with an 11-13 start. Then we started struggling and have dropped from 5th to last place, I can't remember ever being in last place in a pool league in my entire life. Well I'll start with how we got there, and what we are going to do to get ourselves a trophy by seasons end!

Three weeks ago, we went 0-6 against the now 2nd place team. I played well going 5-0, but as a team we only managed to win 8 out of 25 games. We were missing 8 ball shots for big wins and scratching a lot which sort of brought us down. We had a bye week which made things worse (for me at least).

Last week after our bye week, we played the now 4th place team at our bar. We went 1-5, again winning 8 out of 25 games...I went 0-5 and shot a 19! I can't remember EVER losing all 5 of my games in this format, even in my high roller season.

Turning things around is somewhat of a statistical anomaly, things just haven't been clicking this season. After 7 weeks last year in the Silver, we probably had 8 or 9 ERO's...this season our team has 1. I've messed up at least a couple this season, and only have 1 runout against me so far.

Making it to 3rd is probably a stretch, we are playing our nemisis from last season "Risky's Broken English"...but I like our chances. I think we can definitely make it back to 0.500 in this league, but anything higher will require a few good rolls.

More diagrams to come, I forget the layout if I don't make them the next day...

Back To The Gold

Back in 2007, I shot on the Smooth Stones in the Widmer Wheat Gold...only because they wouldn't let us play in the High Roller Division. We ended up winning the league by 19 rounds and got 6th in the High Roller league in 2008. Since then I have had 2 kids and needed to decide which 1 league do I want to play in the fall, and who do I want to play with?

In 2009 I quit that High Roller team since I had more fun playing with my dad and company on our Sunday Peels league. We tried a 7 man rotation on Sunday and I joined up with Ryan, Brian, Eric, and Spike on Widmer Wheat Silver...poised to win the league. Spike died in tragic accident and pool suddenly didn't matter much anymore.

After a solid season last year with a little dissapointment in the final league standings, we took the city tournament by beating our nemesis in our WW Silver league.

This league is going to be a challenge for us, the top 2 teams from the WW Silver were moved to WW Gold (correctly so) as we pulled 20 rounds ahead of 3rd place. In 2009 WW Silver, we finished 4th but got stuck in A city...we managed to prove our worth by beating the WW Gold league champ and a couple other top 5 teams from that division after a 5-6th finish.

My dad and I played on a team this spring and won the league. Now the same team is back for the fall, and we are planning to do it again!

Last time I played WW Gold, I went 62-53 with a low 7 average. My goal is to win 70% of my games and finish in the top 5 overall for power average.

League Stats, Week 14

We had a good week back before our xmas break, and the 2nd place team had a bad one...

Extended our lead to 5 rounds after we were down 2 rounds on Broken English just 2 weeks ago..

League Recap Week 13

Our team played the position round last week and managed to have a great week against them. Going 5-1 with a close match, winning 14-11 in 8 ball games. We were 2 rounds behind the leaders, but now have a 2 round lead...no looking back now!

We definitely won the key games last week...we didn't shoot our best, although Chas did have another 50 night. The round we managed to lose was the one that Chas ERO'd for a 10-0.

Tonight we have Drifter's Wood, 3rd place...we played them the first week with a nice 6-0 against them. Hopefully we can repeat that...

Week 12 Recap

Well we played the Felt Lizards last Wednesday, and managed to go 5-1 and get within 2 of Broken English...

I can't remember if it was the 1st or 2nd round, but it Ryan and my dad were shooting and one of them needed to win. Ryan's opponent played a safety and left him a kick shot...

I wasn't paying attention to see him call the corner...but Brian surely saw him claim that pocket. I turned in time to see the kick and watch the 6 ball roll pocket speed into the corner. This one-rail kick bank got us the round and started us off nicely...

The very next round Brian needed to make 7 balls to get the round and this happened...

He was trying to cut the 7 ball in and it looked like he had room, but the cueball nicked the ball in front and drove the cue off line...knocking the 8 in.

We ended 219-151 for total and won 19 out of 25 eight ball games...

This screenshot is to settle an argument about our opponents this past week...this team won the WW Silver 2 years in a row before finishing 7th in the last season (2009-2010).

This will be next week's 8 Ball Run challenge...the first game I made 3 balls, but my other 2 breaks were dry. I snapped a picture of this one...

League Update, Week 10

Well, our last pool league night didn't go well against the new #1 team in our league...it started off really cruel the first round when this bad double-kiss roll that Ryan got cost us the first round.

After the scratch...it left their best player who is 39-6 overall in league an easy out. I would have done the same thing for the breakout most likely...

We ended up fighting back to 2-2, down 3 or so balls going into the last round. Chas (35-5) broke dry, but left it wide open to get ERO'd...it was the battle of the two top records in the league in that game and we got, well unlucky.

I played poorly my last game missing a breakout shot with ball in hand...and we lost the last round 50-20ish.

We will get to play these guys again in the week 12 position round...no mercy! (and maybe a few rolls...)

Here are the updated standings for week 10...the top team has their bye this week and we play the Felt Lizards and need all 6 to stay within striking distance of Broken English

League Week 9

Well, last week was our bye week...and we managed to drop from 1st to 2nd when we didn't even play?

The top standings is based on win percentage and Broken English went 6-0 again last week to pass us even though we had a 1 round lead before.

Tomorrow we play the 1st place team at our bar (Cappy's)...last season I think we beat them all 3 times we played them. So we definitely have their number, it would be nice to 6-0 them like we did last year a couple times.

Their team is pretty much the same and our team is a stronger than last year, should be a good match...my prediction is a 4-2 victory. A bad night would be 2-4 them and I wouldn't be surprised if I was writing that we went 6-0 again on Thursday morning.

We have struggled a little the past couple weeks...we've won total by 20 and ended up 3-3 for instance.

The 3rd place team isn't close enough to prevent a rematch in a couple weeks in the position round. My prediction is 8-4 in our upcoming matches against Broken English...

We will likely be playing this team 4 times, as compared to the rest of the teams being played twice. If anything, this ought to bring 3rd place a little closer...especially if we dominate these matches like we did last year!

Week 7 League Update

We played the 4th place team (now 5th place team) last week, and played pretty well as a team. Our team won 12 out of the first 15 games and then we went downhill...losing 6 out of the last 10 and both the last two rounds. We didn't even have a Jägerbomb, but I like this guys costume!

So we ended up going 4-2 last week, I won my first 4 (with an ERO the 2nd game)...finally made a ball on the break! Then I lost my last game after my opponent broke dry...I had a good chance to run out with one problem ball. I went for the tough shape on my first ball and didn't get it. I missed my next shot since I didn't have a back-up option. My opponent ran 3 or 4 and missed, but left me a tough combo with really no safety option...since he rattled his miss in front of the pocket. I lost 1-10...

We play the Barra Cudas this week, and need to have a good week as Broken English has went 17-1 the past 3 weeks and is gaining.  Next week we have a bye, then we play the 2nd place team before the Thanksgiving break.

Week #5 League Recap

We played at home this past week and played a team that was at 0.500 in the league, the South Sliders.

This opponent was a younger team with relatively new players, except for Tony, at least according to our local league stats. There weren't many safeties played this week, mostly run-n-gun style playing.  I prefer to play like that, but only won "3 out of 5" of my games this past week.  Partly due to under-estimating an opponent slightly, as I broke and attempted to run out a tough rack. Assuming my opponent would give me another chance based on his previous games.

Chas shot another 50, and now has 4 "50's" with a win/loss record of 23-2.  We have all won some key games to get some rounds, but this good start from Chas has had a big impact to our team record of 27-3.

With a win percentage of 90%, this is the best start a team I've been on has ever done...

I remember our Sunday Incognito team had a substaintial win/loss record in 2008, but we had "Who Cares" on our butt all the way through the season, needing a 3-3 or better the final night to win the league!

It almost seems like our team is in the wrong division, although we did get 4th in the silver last season. We changed 2 players definitely for the better!

Back in the Widmer Wheat in 2007, our team pleaded to play in the Master HiRoller League. We instead dominated the Widmer Wheat Gold, won team A, and made the top 10 at Midwest. Sometimes it is a little fun winning, just hope it doesn't hurt the quality of our pool decisions.

This week we play at Drifter's against the Screw-ups, I haven't had an ERO for a while (but have messed up 3 or 4 high percentage ones)...looking forward to extending our lead tomorrow night!

Week #4 Update

Well we had another good week, going 5-1 again with a couple ERO's on our team. I shot a 50 and am gaining on Chas for hit points. Chas is 18-2, I'm 17-3...a couple hot starts. Everyone is winning key games to get rounds. Ryan and My dad both pulled their games out to win the round.

Chas's winning streak died at 16, will be tough to beat this season...I'm at 5 in a row now with my 50, if I had won my last game last week..I'd be at 11!

Cappy's 8BallRun.com League Recap, Week 3

Everyone played well on Wednesday night leagues, we managed to go 6-0 with a close one in the last round.  My dad got ran out on and lost 1-10, and it came down to either Chas or I needed to win.  Chas shot his 3rd straight 50 and is now 15-0...

My dad had this shot in the 4 round for a 10-5, here's the diagram

...and the video of his kick in.

Brian had a tough 8 ball shot here, it is a potential scratch shot if you slow roll it...(and you'll leave the 8 in front of the hole if you miss)

I probably woulda fired it, but would have had a better chance to miss it.

Well we play the new 2nd place team next week, hope to keep it going and extend our lead.

Pool League Week #2

Well, we have already developed a nice lead in our 8 ball pool league...3 rounds.

Last season, we ended up in 4th place...and were only 3 rounds out of 1st.  We are no longer Fishin' though...Q Ball express moved up to the Gold Division, 1st Ave is now "Drifter's Wood"

So we definitely need to stretch our lead and maybe win the league by 20 or so rounds! :)
