Great Plains 4 City Tournament

Our Monday team finished 2nd in the league, placing us in the 'A' division for team at this years GP4 City Tournament. After singles events on Wed/Thurs, we had our first team match on Thursday evening (9:30) with a bye in the first round. Our league used a 16-game, 4 person format...but the A and Master team divisions were using a 32-game format.

Thursday we played agains the a pretty good team, one that we could definitely beat. We were a little off at the beginning, falling behind about 35 balls after 12 games. With only 4 games left, we fought back and tied up the match. After 31 out of 32 games, nothing was settled and the winner of the last game gets the match. Our opponent made a tough 8 ball up the rail to win the match.

Friday evening, our first loser bracket match went pretty well...a couple of us were shooting well to keep the match close. Then we pulled away to get up enough with 2 games left. We played right away again, and ended up down 10 with 3 games left. My teammates pulled out a couple nice wins to give me a winner take all match in the last game.

We already had a safety game in progress after my teammate won, then my opponent placed the cueball really close to his ball for a straight in shot. Told him I was going to call a ref, but he changed his mind...wish I would have called him over anyhow. Seconds later, my opponent tries for the bank on his last ball, makes it and appears to foul as the cue ball appears to stop when it hits the tip of his stick.

After I told him I thought it was a foul, he immediately offered my ball-in-hand...even though he didn't think he fouled. A rerack was also suggested, but I told him to just shoot the long 8 ball he left himself. He missed, then I nearly messed it up...but made a tough 8 ball to win. It was after midnight, and our reward was an 8:30am match the next morning.

Won a couple matches in the morning before we lost our afternoon match. Matches were scheduled 2 hours apart for 32-games, we were expected to shoot on 4 tables for the first part of the match since Singles was scheduled later on Saturday.

Only issue I had was the format the 32-games were played...it would be much simplier and faster if two games with the same opponent were played back to back instead. This tournament always runs short where there is a requirement to play on 3 or 4 tables to speed up play, but I think 30-minutes per match could be saved if back-to-back play was incorporated.

Overall, great tournament for our team in finishing 5th-6th in the A division out of a 32 team bracket. Next year my Monday and Wednesday teams will be combining into a single team, which should surely result in lots of fun!

2011 Lincoln City Pool Tournament

Well, after a poor performance in Master singles where I missed the "money" by messing up at 3-3 on the winner side...twice, the rest of the city tournament went as hoped.

Speed Pool - Tuesday

I signed up for the scotch double DYP tournament and got a B player I suspect...named Dan of course. Well the Dan's were no match for the Master-Master team that we drew for the first round...ELIMINATED.

As for speed pool, my first 3 attempts were around 1 min 15 seconds...my 4th was 1:08 ish and my 5th came in at 58 seconds. This was enough to qualify me 3rd for the Speed Pool Finals. Had Preston in the first round, race to 2...it came down 1-1 and we both shot the 8 ball within seconds of each other and I lost. Then my match was Cobber where I won 2 straight when he was called for a foul (?push shot?) and I finished 6 seconds later with his 10 second penalty. Then I managed to beat Preston to make the finals where I had Brad who won Master singles and speed pool last year. He whooped me...but 2nd was good.

Team City Tournament

I played very well throughout the team city tournament, with 5 EROs and another 10-0 in the 25 games that I played...18-7 record. As a team we played well, but struggled a couple times where we didn't play our best game. We gave up 20+ ball leads during our Thursday/Friday night matches, but managed to sneak them out. Saturday we had an IMPORTANT match at noon with our league night rivals (Risky's Broken English).

To make matters worse, I got 5th row seats to Kenny Chesney for my wife for Valentine's Day...which was that night. If we lost to Broken English, we played at 5pm and no concert for me...if we win, we play right away at 2:30 and are done until Sunday whether we win or lose at 2:30.

Well, I broke and ran for a 10-2 against their best player in the 1st round...won 10-1 after banking the 8 ball in my next game, then broke and ran again for a 10-1 in the 3rd round. I think we were only up 8 then...

Going into the last round, we were down 2 and I was first and broke and ran to hook myself on the 8 ball.

Then my opponent missed a combo and game be another chance to win 10-5 and I missed the 8 ball in the side...tried to leave him a long shot, but he managed to get out.

My dad was 2nd in the line-up against their best player, who broke and ran for a 10-0. So, we were down 2, I lost 7-10 and my dad lost 0-10...we are down 15 with 3 games left. I really thought that was the last straw for us and we would again lose to them in an important match.

But Chas gave us some life when his opponent messed up a safety and gave him a chance to pull off this runout...

A few minutes later, Brian hooped and hollered after banking his last ball in for another big win.

Now the score was close enough that it meant whoever won the last game...would win the match. Ryan has never let me down...but did lose after one opponent got lucky against him!

Ryan's opponent scratched giving him a chance to runout his 2 solids and the 8 ball with ball-in-hand. He started with the right shot taking the combo...just have to make sure that you don't accidently make both solids and hook yourself on the 8 ball.

Shape off a ball hanging in the pocket (duck) can easily be messed up...by catching a little more (or less) of this object ball it will greatly affect the speed remaining on the cue.

Well, he left himself a bank at the 8 ball...WHAT...he is going to cut that, no friggin' way. I walked over to look at the angle and didn't think it was "makeable"...but now I wish I'd have gotten my camera out to take a photo or video of this shot. His opponent called a ref over to watch the shot...but the stripe was past the 8 so it would be obvious if it was good or not

He dropped it in and our team yelled (even before the ref called it good)...BEST MATCH EVER.

We played Stacked in the finals on Saturday and again on Sunday...it was close on Saturday, but not Sunday. In the Sunday Finals, we played awesome...taking a 101-51 lead after 12 games. My dad fell to his knees after an ERO in the team finals...

Team photo...need to get a plaque for our bar Cappy's since he treats us so well! They have good food and fun poker nightlife at Cappy's.

2009 City Pool Re-cap

The 10 days of Lincoln's city tournament were up and down, luckily ending on a high for the weekend.

Started off playing a rated 9 ball tournament, masters had to win 4, A had to win 3, and the rest had to win 2 games. My first match was against the eventual winner of the tournament, he needed 3 games and I needed 4 games. He made a 9 on the break and ended up beating me 3-3...somehow. My next match was against a 2, and he snapped the 9 the first game...making me win the next 4 straight and I failed. Out of the 9 ball, I played a mini tournament and won $25 on a $5 entry, 8 person tournament. The finals were against a team-mate, but he got $15.

Our masters team didn't do well, it was bracketed and as the 6th place team in the league...we got an "easy" match in the 11th place team in the league. Throughout the whole match, the runouts were a plenty... Our team had 4 (2 were mine) and the other team had 3. We built up a 13 point lead with 3 games left when they broke and ran for a 10-1. Now the lead was 4 and 2 games left with my game up... I broke and ran and missed my nudge on the 10 ball leaving myself a backcut for the runout and team match win. Then this happens...

My opponent gets ball in hand and runs out...now were are up 1 with a game left. And this is the situation the final two players were in...

Probably the same safety that I woulda played...but it ended up costing us the match with the bank luck going their way!

Our master team then managed to win one match, before losing out the next day for $150 payday. My wife had been at the tournament site the whole day and was still interested in playing a scotch doubles tournament at 8 (or 8:50 as it was) that night. We discussed going to the casino, but decided to play instead. The women break in the scotch doubles 9-ball and my wife fired the 9 in on the break while I was in the bathroom in our first match. The next 3 matches went that way until we found ourselves down 0-2 in a race to 3. We played great together and pulled it out to get to the final 4. Our next match was probably the best team in the tourney, and we again fell behind 0-2. This time a couple poor safeties got us the match in 3 straight games. The finals were a bruisin at 3-0 and we took the title!! Definitely had a blast...and got $160. Great ending to the weekend...here's a picture I took of the bracket!! :)

2008 Fall City Tournament

Told my team that I couldn't make it to Midwest in a few months, but we did fare well in the City tournaments.

Speed Pool: Qualified with 1:11, 1:06, 1:03, 1:01 & finally 48 seconds. Every 3 attempts cost me $5 and I was on my fourth Jackson... Top 4 made the final with a heads up race to 2 format. I ended up with 3rd place and won my $20 back...top 2 split the money.

City Team: Our team won the A division undefeated, one of the guys on our team won the Master's singles too.

Master Singles: Lost my first match 1-3, then in my second match I was up 2-0 and I scratched on the break. He ran out, then broke and ran out....then I had the break the last game, didn't make shit on the break and he again ran out. OUCH...
